Q: I enrolled in my company's HSA plan for 2006 but did not select any investment for the cash deposits. I want to invest in Vanguard funds but the only paperwork I have relates to insurance, not investments. What am I missing?

A: Opening a health savings account is a two step process. You completed the first step when you enrolled in your employer's high deductible health plan that meets HSA requirements. The second step is to open a HSA savings or investment account where you and your employer can make deposits. The HSA account application for investing in Vanguard funds can be downloaded from If your employer will be making the contributions, make sure they know the account number and address of the newly opened account.
