Return of the estate tax

Q: Should I expect the estate tax to return after 2010?

A: No one knows for sure whether the estate tax, also referred to as the “death tax” or “taxation without respiration” will return to our tax system. We have had an estate tax for most of our country’s history but it has phased out in recent years. Congress may or may not reinstitute the tax. Even if the estate tax does return, there is strong and growing support for reduction of all tax rates in order to raise overall tax revenue for the government. (Yes, this sounds counter-intuitive but is a basic principle of free market macro-economics that lower tax rates actually increase the total tax revenue collected by a government).
