Accident rider coverage

originally posted: 10/25/2005  revised: 12/12/2010

Q: I am considering one of the short term health insurance plans at FreedomBenefits.net . If I do not select the accident supplement rider, are medical expenses related to an accident covered?

A: Yes, these expenses are covered subject to the policy deductible. If the accident supplement rider is selected then these expenses are covered on a “first dollar” basis and you do not have to pay the deductible.

Another option is to add supplemental policy that adds coverage to accidents in addition to whatever benefits are available from other insurance. These polices are an inexpensive way to boost overall coverage, with some premiums as low as $30 per month. Examples are Value 24 Hour Accident Insurance and Smart Accident Insurance.

Although accidents are covered under medical insurance subject to deductibles and co-payments, it may be smart to boost coverage with a rider or separate accident insurance.
